Freemasonry promotes Friendship, Morality, and Brotherly Love among its members. It is, by definition, a Fraternity; comprised of men from every race, religion, opinion, and background who are brought together as Brothers to develop and strengthen the bonds of friendship. With over three million members, Freemasons belong to the world’s most significant and oldest fraternal organization. Freemasonry proposes to “make good men better” by teaching – with metaphors from geometry and architecture – about building values based on great universal truths.

Freemasonry, Explained

Freemasonry, often called Masonry, is one of the world’s oldest and most historic membership organizations. For over 300 years, it has been a global fraternity of individuals dedicated to self-improvement and community service. Rooted in a series of moral teachings conveyed through allegory and the symbolism of ancient stonemasonry, Freemasonry is much more than its rich history. It provides a pathway to forge lifelong friendships, find purpose, and establish deep connections.

Freemasonry is a charitable organization devoted to promoting the welfare and happiness of mankind through acts of kindness and benevolence. It seeks to enlighten its members on personal responsibility and principles that enhance human welfare. Upholding values such as the worship of God, truth, justice, fraternity, philanthropy, enlightenment, and liberty, Freemasonry encourages loyalty to one’s country and obedience to its laws. As a non-political and non-sectarian organization, it maintains a neutral stance on political and religious discussions to foster unity and avoid personal animosities.

At its Core, Freemasonry is About:

True Friendship Freemasonry offers a unique blend of shared traditions, common goals, and a commitment to fostering lifelong relationships, often resulting in members meeting their closest friends through the organization. George Washington once said, “Freemasonry is founded on the immutable laws of truth and justice, and its grand object is to promote the happiness of the human race.” This sentiment resonates through the strong bonds formed among Masons as they strive to uplift each other and their communities.

Personal Development While ancient Freemasons were dedicated to building physical structures, modern Masons focused on building character. They uphold and demonstrate strong values through their actions, relationships, and service to others. As Washington reflected, “The grand object of Masonry is to promote the happiness of the human race.” This focus on personal growth and ethical behavior remains a cornerstone of Masonic philosophy.

Community Service Freemasons pledge to support their communities in various ways. From local charity drives to statewide initiatives, Masons actively engage in giving back and making a positive impact on those around them. In Georgia, for instance, Masons contribute significantly to local charities and community projects. The state’s Masonic Lodges have supported educational programs, healthcare initiatives, and disaster relief efforts, embodying the Masonic commitment to community service.

“What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal.
– Brother Albert Pike
